advantages of electronic throttle

One advantage of electronic throttle is from an emissions stand point the
ECM now knows what the throttle angle and the estimated air flow will be
ahead of time instead of reacting to the throttle change (you are requesting
a throttle angle from the computer with a fly by wire system). This allows
the ECM to make calibration changes beforehand for improved emissions and
driveability. With the standards getting so strict, a lot of the emissions
problems are now in the transient areas and electronic throttle helps reduce
this problem.

You also no longer need an idle air control (IAC) valve/motor.

With traction control systems, you don't have the duplication of the
throttle body/throttle cable and the throttle relaxer (in some company's
version of the electronic throttle at least).

In ECM controlled transmission applications it can also allow the engine
management to match engine rpm to the proper gear for better shift quality
and improved transmission durability.

Electronic throttle also gives the ECM another variable to use in torque
control strategies for transmission/powertrain durability.

Packaging can also be an advantage (along with no longer needing to have a
throttle cable go through the firewall).

Engine response/feel can be more easily adjusted through programming the
throttle control (versus multi-ratio linkages etc.). This can allow
different vehicles or different versions of vehicles to use the same engine
yet have a different "feel".
