Knock Sensor LED output

Hello all-
I'm a new guy and I thought I would introduce myself and ask for a point in
the right direction.
I'm a graduate student in mechanical engineering and my current electrical
exposure is fairly limited although I would like to think that I know more
than most of my classmates. I'm also taking a class in Mechatronics this
semester which deals primarily with the Motorolla MC68H12 and its
integration into robotic devices(we have to build a autonomous robot).
Eventually I would like to develop a device similar to the J&S safeguard(
http://safeguard.bizland.com/safeguard.html ) which retards timing when
knock is detected. But I think I would do better with something small that
has less opportunities for screw ups, so I'm thinking of building a device
which will display knock on an LED bank.
I'm sure a project as simple as this has been done before and was hoping
someone could point out a link to get me started. I've read the data sheet
for the HIP9010 and I think it does more than I need. I've "heard" that the
Honda OEM knock sensor outputs a 0-1V signal proportional to knock severity.
If that were the case, would this project be as simple as hooking it up to a
simple LED driver circuit? Anyone know how to confirm the output of the
knock sensor? Buy one and see if it has numbers?
I hope I'm not redicuouslly off topic. TIA
David Gregory
