That's the primary reason.  Weight.  I heard from a buddy at CLCD (cadillac
engineering)
that the typical Cadillac has 500lbs of wire on board.  Secondary benefits
are you can 
run power hungry devices such as solenoids that push open valves.
And to the guy who said something about F1 cars using this, I doubt it was
electric solenoids.
Maybe a oil/electric hybrid.  I've seen em.  Even the 42V jobs are huge.
12V would be like a 
coffee can on each valve.  With 1/0 wire going into it!

Higher voltage for the whole system means less current for the same power
(wattage).  Wire gauge is based on current, not power or voltage, so with
less current you can use thinner, lighter wiring and connectors.  Wiring
harnesses weigh a lot, and are getting more complex all the time.
