Agreed! Since you are not looking for precise timing information here it seems like it should be
possible to put a simple mechanism like a photointerrupter on the cam pulley or distributor. I
still have an aftermarket points replacement system on a 1978 Audi Fox which used a photointerrupter
in place of the points ... the thing still works just fine ... after at least 15 years ...
