There's lots to be said for simplicity. There are still applications which use
this approach. Cummins diesels as installed in the "old" body style Dodge
pickups are but one example of flow controlled boost. Remove the stock muffler,
replace with glasspack or (heavens!) a straightpipe and you can feel the
improvements with even the most poorly calibrated butt-ometer. Same is true for
lotsa tractors and big equipment. They just don't get used like a street car,
and don't need the dynamic boost control offered by a wastegate. And like Bruce
implied, when running at full boost for 12-14 hours on end, reliability is a key
issue.
