Greeting folks,
I was rather shocked to come back from vacation and find out how upset some
people had become over what was intended to be a rather straightforward
email indicating my company’s need for a consultant. I gather that people
from the group have been cheated in the past, so there is much fear about
this. I don’t personally recall the issues, but I’m sorry that they happen.
We have never “stolen” ideas or cheated anyone on the group. Still, some
group members have voiced some strong concerns, which I will do my best to
address.

One person was upset because about two years ago, we were looking for a
consultant for similar needs. Unfortunately, someone else was selected, and
I believe I sent him an email indicating that we would keep him “on file”
for future needs. We ended up working with another gentleman from the
group, and ultimately got referred to the firm BKM, inc. (from San Diego) to
provide the services we required. We paid them thousands of dollars for
their services – certainly not getting “advice for free.” We really did
receive some apparently quite skilled applicants, but unfortunately, we
could only select one of them.

I’m sad that this situation has caused so many people to be this upset. In
1996, I shared my PC-Based EFI system freely with the group. Since that
time, I have responded to hundreds of EFI inquiries from all over the world
with little regard for keeping “secrets” to myself. Over 4 years ago years
ago, I publicized EFI5 – the result of a great deal of personal work of EFI
development. A while later, I worked together with a number of people in
the group to revise ECU6 (my latest system) into ECU7. All the results of
this work were also freely published. I’ve even sent spare PCBs and
components to people to help them get their own projects going. Finally,
last year I decided to devote full time to developing a marketable EFI
system (I mentioned in the ECU6/7 docs that I hoped to market an EFI system
some day). Myself and a number of other people have spent thousands of
hours on research and development at a cost of nearly $200,000. We have
established our own company and look forward to offering a product that will
hopefully be a positive addition to the diy-efi market.

We have no interest in stealing ideas to make a profit, nor do we do
business in this way. I personally credit cooperation and sharing of
knowledge for giving not only my business a start, but also for providing
many others with the foundation for products, scholarly research, etc. We
are currently working on version 9 of our ECU. It is partially based on the
design used from the very first PC-based EFI system (I hope it’s not frowned
on to use one’s own ideas from past projects!). It is disheartening to be
accused of “stealing” other’s ideas – it sort of makes me want to avoid
having anything to do with the group in the future. I do recognize that
opinions were only voiced by a few individuals, but that many others
silently participate in the group. Even so, if just one person has been
upset by a misunderstanding, I will try my best to correct it. It is our
intent to share technical details of whatever we can with the group, and I
expect I’ll have the chance to post schematics and software for ECU8 soon.

I'm in the EFI business because I love cars and electronics. I've been
willing to devote my life to it for the time being with the hope that I can
make a living from doing something I enjoy. If this group really frowns on
anyone making a living from an EFI-related field, I'm sorry for those in the
group who are silent. Nevertheless, it is clear that diy-efi is no place to
post ads and I respect this, so I apologize and hereby retract the one I
posted. I know that many people have found this group to be a wonderful
resource for information exchange, and look forward to its continuation in
that direction in the future.
