Well, unless your engine is ridiculously peaky, 5 or 6
should be fine for most things, especially if we're
not talking about a racing vehicle.  Beyond that it's
down to whoever set the gear ratios doing their job
well...

That's something that requires a lot of
trial-and-error to obtain, I would think.

Nothing wrong with that.  ;)  To me, the only place I
REALLY would care about that would be high-speed
cruise, since I doubt very much that the fuel
efficiency would be dramatically different with
different settings when there's little to no air drag
using up power (30 mph?).
