The "safe" answer is no, too much current.

The specs I have vary w/ temp, supply voltage, mil vs.
commercial, but basically a high output is limited to about
1ma (Ioh is the parameter), so try a 10K-12Kish resistor,
if the LED isn't bright enough you might try a high intensity
one as they tend to be more efficient for a given current.

Failing that, a 12K ohm or higher resistor into the base
lead of a 2N2222/2N3904 transistor, emitter to ground,
collector to a 1K resistor and LED to +12V ought to do it.
