If you mean this ringing problem, it can be eliminated by disconnecting
the capacitor from the coil _just_ after the spark has decayed. The
smart coil may have such feature, as GM surely knows Ion sensing..;)
Althougn, as the timing is quite critical, it is  seldom used, as the main
benefit is only in ion sensing becoming easier. 

It is also quite demanding for the semiconductor switch (breaker), as it
may have to handle quite high flyback voltages. Normally there's a little
delay before the cap is disconnected and started to be recharged Then the
flyback problem doesn't exist, but ringing does. With contemporary
technology the voltage is not a problem.
