Yeah, that's true, but none of these cars have anything to GAIN by
using CDI. There's no suggestion in this discussion that CDI really is anything
superior, or at least superior enough to warrant tossing out the inductive system,
all by itself, at least,
BUT, since CDI is used in all the Saab vehicles, including their "costNOobject"
models as you put it, BECAUSE it's integral to their ionization technology,
that's both a counter-example (or well, you did say 'very few' instead of 'none'),
and proof that you can't draw any conclusions from your observation above,
EXCEPT perhaps that since all the other mfgs were locked out of using
ionization because of the Saab patents (that is until very recently, when GM bought
a large interest in Saab directly), this obviated the need/desire for any of the other
high-end vehicles to have CDI.
Point being: nobody is saying CDI is 'better', but (1) it's obviously no 'sacrifice' as one
wag put it, and (2) it definitely helps the ionization implementation IF you have that
technology also in hand to use.
One wag here recently says ionization techniques are 'ignition neutral', another says CDI
is a 'sacrifice' of decent IGN. Neither is accurate. Since Saab has been developing and perfecting ion technology for over a decade now, do any of these amateur pundits really think
Saab would have stuck with CDI if there was no integral advantage to it, OR it made their
IGN systems marginal?
I'm no fanatic of CDIs, and even recognize they have some failings for certain fuels and
engine designs that require a long spark, but lets keep our prejudices out of this. CDI has
been proven perfectly adequate for conventional SI petrol engines, even hipo ones, by Saab,
a 'real world fact' if there was one, and it's also a help in making ionization sensing practical.
