[Diy_efi] external coil gm hei modules ?

 i have a question about the function of the gm small cap hei ignition module 
found on
EFI gm cars/trucks. how exactly is timing controlled in these units??? how 
does the signal proccess work. in my playing with honda efi i noticed that it 
uses voltage to cycle a vacum selenoid therby retarding and advancing the 
timing. how does the gm module work. if its a similar operation i may have a 
way to solve one of the most annoying problems in turbocharging the (86-89) 
honda accords. thanx for any help !
