[Diy_efi] Getting started with PIC or Atmel AVR or whatever

Just a few days ago I used a fuel injector out of my car to inject water
into a sink with a basic stamp. However the stamp does not seem to be fast
enough to be used in a car and it got fried when my friend tried
controlling a spark plug with it... The microchip PIC and Atmel AVR seem
to be favorites on this list so I was thinking of switching to those. How
does one get started with these chips? The chips are much cheaper than the
stamp but the programmers I've seen on the net are a good deal more
expensive. Also, Jameco (which is about 10 minutes away) has the PICs but
where would I get one of Atmel's uCs? To control the injector with the
stamp we just used a transistor and some misc parts. Would it be that easy
with the PIC or the the AVR? The programming language used is not really
an issue, I've used C and basic for several years and have also used
assembly to write programs for an m68k simulator. Which one should I go with?
