There was a Japanese guy who had a webpage (URL long since lost but
someone here will probably remember) with a circuit that would let
you read out the internal ROM. This is a pretty standard ability for
mask programmed 8051s, as long as the security fuse is not blown.
Even if you can't find his page you should be able to find the
info on how to do this in the 8051 docs.

Since I can't read Japanese I don't know what, if anything, the guy
said about the security fuse in Toyota ECUs. On one hand it seemed
odd that they'd let ECUs out w/o blowing the security fuse. On the
other hand, you pretty much have to have one of the ECUs to use the
code, and duplicating the hardware design will be a ton more effort
than just copying the code. Also there wasn't much that I can think
of in there that was so special or clever that people would be dying
to reverse it.
