But... isn't there a problem with increased NOx levels at higher combustion
temps?

The real point of peak efficiency occurs at peak combustion temp.

Peak temps occur at a Lambda of 1.1 or so.

This is a 10 % savings on fuel plus a few extra % for the higher
temps.

Nearly all cars cruise the freeways at this A/F ratio and are
considered to be in "Lean Burn Mode" The catalytic converter
has very little work at these A/F ratio.
