It sounds reasonable that you think of this.
However an efi system costs several hundred dollars anyway,
so a better system probably worths a few more dollars.

If you need something simple, the megasquirt is there.
If you want some free resources, programming in C language,
sequential and spark control capability, alphanumeric LCD,
easy (a simple cable from parallel port) ISP programming,
 you can build a megasquirtavr for about $100.

Assembled unit is available for 219 Euro.

Of course you can choose to work a few hundred more hours, and
have a less dependable system, but if you think about it more,
it will not seem such a good idea. The notebook will be very useful
for datalogging and tuning, but why would you want to depend on it?

 If you want some real-time functions on your notebook,
 start processing ion-sense data with it. At least your car will not need
a $150 towing when the laptop dies or freezes (in winter or 
the notebook and windows way)
