As I was led to understand by the Harley engineer (who
is also a race engineer for several AMA Formula Xtreme
teams, I should also add), there was significant
additional ring wear once you got past a certain level
of depression in the crankcase.  He didn't go into too
many details, but I suspect there may be bending of
the ring with fairly low pressures that cause the wear
to be concentrated on the upper edge of the ring face
(although this is merely supposition on my part).
