At turnoff a relay coil will induce a voltage spike. relays can be had with a protection diode built
in.

Relays are not very sensitive to EMI or RFI. Triacs are much more sensitive to false triggering.

NO, because once the triac or scr is turned on, the only way to turn it off is to remove power from
it. On power line application, this happens 120 times per second. For a battery powered application,
once you turned on the triac it would stay on until the battery was disconnected! (or ignition
switch was turned off)
