[Diy_efi] Triac versus Relay - Knowledge please!

You can also reverse bias a diode across the coil of
the relay and lower the voltage spike to > .7 VDC, of
course this depends on the diode as well.  

You might look at some of the newer MOSFET's they have
a low internal "R" and will carry a pretty good load
if heat sinked correctly.
