That's a water jacket hole.... (lose coolant when removed)? I need to
put it somewhere else that I have better access to.

The water jacket plug hole predates the knock sensor, there couldn't
have been much of a design decision to place it there.

Agree with that, I only had to replace mine because I crushed it while
installing the engine. But on a used motor, who knows?
