and believe it or not, SAE has done mileage tests on trucks... all these
people with trucks that drive with the tailgate down or off to "improve
mileage" are actually hurting mileage by as much as 5%...  the aerodynamics
of a truck are designed for the least resistance thru air with the tailgate
in the up position... the only way to improve it is with a tonneau cover
over the bed.
the aerodynamics depends on the "bubble" of air in the bed to allow air
coming over the cab to flow back fairly smoothly...  with the tailgate down
or off, it created a turbulence, partial vacuum behind the cab that destroys
the aerodynamic flow
