Carl,

Probably what started your problem is the steering wheel lock is jammed.
The way you unjam that is to rock the steering wheel left and right
(like a little kid who is pretending to drive). It takes a good bit of
force to do this - don't worry, you will not harm anything. It might be
helpful to have your mate do that while you fiddle with the key.

Was the ignition key fully inserted, when it broke off? If so, you can
use the projections of the keylock to turn it. (I have forgotten what
the Primera is in US speak, so I don't know if the lock cylinder has
projections to help you turn it - most cars do.)

So, rock the steering wheel rather violently left and right, while you
simultaneously turn the ignition key toward the on (and crank)
position. (Yes, your are supposed to turn the steering wheel in two
directions, while you turn the lock in one direction.) The steering
wheel does not have to move much, just enough to relieve pressure on
the lock mechanism. Once you have cleared the jammed steering wheel
lock, the ignition will go back to turning easily.

(This is another problem brought to you by your government. They insist
on these locks. If someone pulls on the steering wheel while the
ignition lock is in the locked position, it will jam and be difficult
to release. I once saw a young lady with an almost new Mercedes 280SL,
have this problem. She was very upset with her beautiful car, until
she gave the wheel the right little tug. In your case, what probably
happened was the steering wheel lock jammed and not realizing what had
happened, you tried too hard to turn the key, which broke it.)

(You only need to turn the wheel in one direction to clear it. If you
can feel that it will turn it easily for a little bit in one direction,
then turn it with a little more force in that direction. If you cannot
feel this difference, just rock it back forth from left to right while
turning the ignition lock projections.)

If your key snapped off while not full inserted, you will have to force
what is left of the key into the key slot until it bottoms out where it
normally did before this problem.

Once the steering wheel lock is unjammed, the key should be easier to
turn and you may be able to retrieve the broken off piece. If you are
lucky, your local keymaker can take the two pieces, put them together
in his machine, and make you a new key. Be sure to get a copy once you
get one to work, so next time you will have a spare with which to lock
the doors.

Please post if you have further questions.

Good luck,
Bobby
