Fixed retard of exhaust cam only on the 4200
The new Northstar and 2.4 ECOTEC  (LE5) are another
matter though :)

Well the exhaust cam actuator is still controlled by
the ecm it is just a lot less sophisticated than the
vvt northstar, 2.8 & 3.6 v6 used in the cts , and the
ecotec. Also the new I-4 and I-5 that is used in the
chevy pickups is based off of the 4200 engine but the
newer models use a vane style instead of a helical
actuator like the 4200. I also believe that recently
the 4200 was changed to vane style too but not sure
which model year. Even though it broadens the torque
range on them, all were done so for emissions purposes
to be able to eliminate the egr valve..............
