Zener diodes would not be a good idea.  A decent rectifier diode with  a high 
PIV and appropriate forward current rating would be correct.  You  could do 
damage with a Zener.  They are meant to conduct in "reverse  breakdown" mode.  
That's exactly what you don't want.
