[Diy_efi] Diy_efi Digest, Vol 5, Issue 1

Allow me to clarify (Add to the confusion!) some of the information I just read. Then west exhaust devices are no longer called Mufflers, they are called After-Filters with Resonators! I work in the Diesel Field and have one of everything in my yard right now on the Garbage Trucks I service. I have AFs with their own computers, they use a separate fuel pump and injector to shoot atomized diesel into the muffler as you drive under maximum load. They fail constantly. Then I have the 'Plug-in' variety, this type of AF gets full to the point of causing back pressure in the exhaust system and sets-off a flashing light. When your light flashes you drive into the yard and up to one of the plugs on the out side of the building. Stop, shut-off the truck, shut-off the batteries and plug-in a 208 volt plug. Shortly afterward you can hear a pump start to growl and diesel is injected into the AF onto a hot coil that makes (eventually) 1150 degrees and cooks the inside of the AF clean. The newest Truck has a catalytic convertor, and AF, a Resonator and a burn chamber. The Hydrogenated Urea is injected into the Burn chamber and heats the exhaust system. The catalytic convertor gets damned hot and burns all the soot and cleans the exhaust so well that you can work right next to the outlet pipe and it does not hurt your eyes. ALL these truck now meet the newest regulations set forth by the California CARB system of controls.

I drive a 4bt that does not smoke because I use an HHO system that makes three liters+ a minute. This clears a great deal of the smoke and emissions. Next I plan to use a little propane to really clean-up the little diesel, once and for all!

There is a second method of aftertreatment control which involves burning highly atomised diesel to raise the pre-cat temperature of the exhaust, it seems to be less favoured by manufacturers because of the detrimental effect on fuel consumption figures. It does however mean that jokes about spark plugs for diesel are now redundant.
