Hi Guys,
I might be able to contribute to the TPI combustion chamber volume question.
My 1987 IROC-Z was built as a 5.0L TPI / T5 transmission combination. During
the planning phase of the 355 TPI project, I ran into this problem. I
measured the 5.0L combustion chamber volume (after carbon removal) and it
was close to 55 cc. It is true that the 5.7L engine combustion chamber
volume was 58 cc.
I looked at many different heads and consulted with my uncle (induction
system specialist). The best overall head (horsepower/dollar & emissions) is
the Airflow Research (AFR) 190 series. The GM Corvette head would need a
fair amount of work (missing EGR port, etc.) to bring it within the stock
performance (power, emissions) of the AFR option. I use this head on my 355
TPI motor (dyno results: 342 BHP @ 5200 RPM, 410 ft.- lbs @ 3900 RPM) and it
has performed outstanding to date.
Best Regards,
Bruce
