Dave, I have an 87 5.0L TPI IROC Z Camaro. The computer in my car is a 1227165. Usually, a bar code tag is attached to the computer body. Look on the tag for the computer number. Is your car a TPI version?? I am not sure if all 5.0L Camaros use the 1227165 computer.

My setup is different than yours, but the same principles still apply. I installed a modified 355 TPI in my Camaro and experienced some high load knocking problems. It turns out that two root causes existed. My base timing was wrong and my engine was leaning out during high load/high rpm conditions. I made the mistake of setting the base timing at 10° BTDC ( 6° BTDC is the recommended adjustment - per Bruce Plecan). The lean condition was solved by slightly adjusting the PE vs. RPM table.

Bruce Plecan, David Cooley, Terry Kelley, and Mark Romans have lots of experience at solving these problems. Their recommendations really helped in my situation.

Best Regards,
