Sorry, coming in on the end of this thread.  To answer the question below,
you may try visiting www.datq.com

They have "cheap" data acquisition stuff.  Had off at one time that would
give you a free 1/2 channel RS-232 interface analog acquisition system.  A
lot of there equipment is low bandwidth stuff (100kHz-ish) but that should
be sufficient for a lot of relatively slow automotive sensor responses.
