If its 12V just about anything will do.  Though, it would be better
for the laptop if you had over 12V, then regulated down to 12V, so as
the batteries die, you still have 12V.

Anyway, if you want to go the "D" cell route... the rechargable
alkalines are awesome... they are great for battery packs for anything
that sucks current in a major way, like a laptop.

And its rechargable.

Count me in for a few bucks.
