P.S. If you are not married to the HC11, you can get a Scenix 70 MHz chip and 
serial programmer/debugger and assembler for $49. The PIC instructions are a 
subset. This thing averages 50 MIPS in an 18 pin DIP (the smallest version). 
The HC11 at 8 MHz is about 2 MIPS and has a steep learning curve to get it 
configured right and to start up and reset correctly.
