YES I agree that it is easier to turn off the vats bit if you have a EPROM
burner and UV eraser.  But lets say you don't.  what is cheaper and does
exactly the same job? Hmm $250 Vs $5.... And if you did it like I did and
wire in a plug and connector, well you have the anti theft when you unplug
the module for when you put it away for storage or leave it parked for a few
days.  Also very useful for when you are on a trip and park your car in a
very shady part of an unfamiliar town. Kinda a lot of effort pulling out
your ECM pulling the chip all the time when you want to make it theft
resistant:-)
