Floppy drives have a track 0 sense output that the
FDD controller processes and returns as a status bit
to the driver software. Stepping out beyond track 0
serves no purpose other than stressing the mechanical
components. Grinding noises are a sign of a problem,
either in the software, the FDD circuitry, the FDD
cable, or perhaps the FDD itself.
