Carl - I had almost the same problem with driveabliity, wierd timing, etc on 
my 93 with 383.  The balancer had cracked and made a real mess of things.  
When when I checked the dist it had crept way off perhaps due to a wierd 
harmonic set up by the balancer.  At least it didn't ruin the crank and I was 
able to change it in a parking lot.
