gif is actually smaller and better for that sort of image.  BMP is
always too big, jpg will add some odd artifacts in diagrams of this
sort (limited color).   I did some testing with flowcharts and gif was
smaller and produced a better picture than jpg, and it was much much
smaller than bmp.
