1997 Chev Chip Advice

I have a friend with a 1997 Chev Z71 4x4 Pickup, anybody purchased a chip for these, or have a recomendation on which one to get or not get.  I am familiar with syty chips but not the newer stuff, do they use a eprom, I believe they have a EEprom or something.  Is it something I could burn myself for him if somebody had a good BIN?
