Also remember with an automatic that the slippage of the converter 
decreases with increasing RPM... once the car is at a speed where the TC 
input and output are up a ways, the slippage is much less and the torque 
multiplication is lower as well.  Locking up the converter in that area 
removes the slippage and allows the engine to pull the car to a higher MPH 
for a given RPM.
I remember back on the Grand Nationals, locking up the converter clutch in 
2nd gear and higher was good for almost 0.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile.  Once 
you are thru 1st gear and rolling, a solid connection is better.
