The only way I got mine out were with a small block of wood, and using a
suspenion pickle fork.

 Criminy, no wonder!  You practically need dynamite to get the damned
things out.
 It'd be a good idea to use lubricant when you reinstall.  Hydraulic
shops can sell you a special lubricant just for O-rings.  The rubber
grease divers use will also work.  If nothing else, use lots of
petroleum jelly.  At least you won't need a crowbar to get them out the
next time...
