I've benchmarked a Mercedes A-class that had a pot to encode the fore-aft
position of the shifter lever (for use with their autoclutch system), but I
haven't come across anything else that outputs a lever position other than
reverse or neutral (and most often, those switches are on the tranny, not
the shifter).
