I'd have to agree w/ most here and say all the GM systems I have seen act as 
independent systems if there is no ECM signal.

Maybe I missed it here but, the way I see it, NO ECM power, no injector 
signal, no fuel from the injector.  No check engine light, sounds dam close 
to no ECM power.  Build enough oil pressure, and the fuel pump will get 
power.  (Most systems I've seen.)

Put another way, add some fuel an it'll run.

If they are underneath the dash, it is easy enough to pull the ECM plug and 
probe it.

Cut wire and VATS are also excellent idea's.
Instead of crooked, maybe their troubleshooting isn't too tourough.
