GM Fuel Pump control scheme

I'm trying to understand something about GM's fuel pump power circuit on
both the '730 ECM.     In the diagrams that I have the pump can get power
either from the ECM controlled fuel pump relay, or from the switch
controlled by oil pressure.  The '747 appears to do the same thing.

If the pump runs whenever ignition pulses are present, then what's the need
for the oil pressure switch?
