Yea, the idea is pretty old.  The technology wasn't there to make it
work.  The last I heard they had diesel engines using electronic valves
about 2-3 years ago, soon to be in gasoline engines.

The coates engine is pretty cool as well.  I saw that a long time ago,
but couldn't remember who made it.
