Wow!  Both you and your father were very lucky!  I guess the
new paint must have caused too much static electricity. 
Musta been metallic paint.  Flat colors are better
insulators. ; )

Try multiples of tens of thousands up to millions.  The
average "static shock" that you get from a doorknob is
around 20Kv.  Typical lightning strikes are around 1 million
volts.  No automotive surge protection is designed to handle
that.

The car looks really wild underneath.  Hopefully the
insurance company has no trouble with that one.
