I think the reason why your gas mileage has improved is probably two fold.  One is because the O2 sensor that you put in is quicker to respond simply because it's newer.

Even though you're adding more fuel, the engine is more efficient and able to use more power during AE, yet probably go leaner or use less fuel during cruise because it is more efficient.  At least that's what I keep telling myself why I need to spend over $350 dollars to get a wideband, but I haven't done it yet.
