Hey guys here's an easier way of pulling a gm trans: (I know you probably hate me by now but that's normal. Most diy'ers do.) Instead of using some 2x4s to hold the engine up get an engine support fixture. Cornwell Tools puts an OTC model on special about every 6 months for a reasonable price that is rated heavy enough to do the Caddy northstar/4t80e configuration. The trans actually weighs 296 lbs and the engine is somewhere around 650 lbs.
Also on about 90% of GM fwd cars and minivans the subframe splits on two sections. Passenger front to driver's rear. The motor stays supported by the leftover subframe and the support fixture, the rack & pinon stays in and the motor doen't move if you set it up right. Best of all on the caddys you can lower the rear of the motor down the required 8 inches to get the trans to clear the inner fender. Caddy trans comes out and back in 8 hours. I did a 4L60e (It replaced the 440-T4) on Friday out and in within 2 hours.
Downside: Caddilac and Saturn subframes don't split. But at least the drivetrain doesn't fall on your head.
By the way I'm not a backyard, weekend kind of mechanic. I'm a full time family supporting Automoitve Technician. (No offence to the backyard guys. I used to be one.)
