So, with your idea applied to the diesel, the logic would be:

4th gear pressure switch to only allow lockup in 4th gear, to a foot switch
to enable me to select lockup, with the brake switch breaking the circuit

Correct? As long as that logic is right, I can take the wiring from there.

All of the pre-EFI trucks with a 700R4 used a vacuum switch on the firewall
to activate the TCC. The vacuum went through a coolant temp switch to stop
TCC lock-up when cold. I have been using just the vacuum switch on my TBI
and, now TPI Blazer for years and I can say that I like the set-up better
than letting the ECM control it. Other trucks I've worked on have ALWAYS
needed some adjusting of the TCC parameters to make them right with bigger
tires/lower gears. Imagine the TCC locking up in third gear at 35 mph and
RPMs drop to 1200. Give it a little gas and it starts locking and unlocking.
Sure, it's nice to be able to adjust those settings, but it is just an
un-needed hassle in most cases I've seen. My vacuum switch set-up uses a 4th
gear pressure switch in the valve body to only allow lock-up in 4th (OD) the
only time I need TCC lockup. It unlocks above 90-92 kPa and locks back under
about 85-88 kPa.

Oops, I just remembered that you're using this on a diesel. They don't make
the same vacuum as a gas, do they. Anyway, that's my view of the types of
factory TCC control systems. A really simple option would be to run the TCC
solenoid to a floor mounted dimmer switch and activate it manually. Just
remember to also run it through a brake pedal switch and a 4th gear switch
for safety.

It does TCC lockup, and if he's running a 700R4, that's all he needs.

Maybe...  The 747 doesn't do transmission.
