Yes, that's right. Mid 87 changed the pump vanes from 7 to 10, and also
auxiliary valve body changes. The 88+ are the way to go, but you can upgrade
the 87- to some extent if needed. Typical upgrades are the corvette servo,
10 vane pump, and extra clutch packs (truck duty).

it's roughly 88 or 89 up is the "better" years for 700r4/4L60 transmissions.

More vanes in the pumps and supposedly little design changes that make the 
internals stronger.
