The difference is the calibration and the configuration. The 97 has one sensor in each manifold, one before the cat and one after the cat. The 98 has one in each manifold and one behind the cat. The ones in the exhaust manifolds would have to be different calibrations due to the 97 monitoring the catalyst efficiency with a seperate o2 sensor.
It may not seem like much difference, but it makes all the difference in the world when an OBDII car is watching itself. Personally, I don't like installing universal O2 sensors for that very reason. More problems than they are worth. Stick with the sensor designed for the application.
