 There is no functional difference.  However, if your spark curve is
under software control, it allows you to dispense with the
distributor, which can give a "cleaner" installation.  You could also
use SAAB or Fordson tractor coils, which just pop on over the spark
plug, and dispense with plug wires entirely.
