Variable cam timing again

I don't expect that you can have this kind of control with a camshaft. 
I have a Lampredi designed 4cyl SOHC in my '77 Fiat. The cam is in a 
seperate casting above the head and acts directly on the tappets. I have 
oft wondered whether the cam might be replaced altogether with 8 
computer driven hydraulic solenoids. Arbitrary valve timing schedules 
would become available.
