How does that do away with the starter ?

Presumably, it would not be necessary to rotate the
crankshaft to rotate the camshaft to close the valves
to then ignite a cylinder charge.  Valves could be
closed by this new means instead.  Sparking a sealed
cylinder would then start the crankshaft rotating.

?  I haven't read about.  I'm just guessing.
