Alternator drain

If we are into fond memories, I once left the lights on in our 1937 Ford
7Y (like an Anglia for those in the US). Battery was completely dead so
I got a torch (flashlight) out of the boot (trunk) and wired that in
as the battery. A couple of turns of the crank handle and we're off.
Reconnected the battery (with the engine running) and drove home.
Hasn't automotive technology 'improved' since then ?  :-)
